MARINOS IOANNIDES

Marinos Ioannides received an MSc in Computer Science at the University of Stuttgart, Germany where his thesis was undertaken at the Hewlett Packard European Headquarters in the area of safety and security of Multiuser and Multitasking Database systems. He received a fellowship from the University of Stuttgart in the faculty of Mechanical Engineering where he participated in several European Commission projects as well as research projects funded by the German Research Foundation. In 1990 he was awarded a half Million Deutsche Mark project from the Federal State of Baden-Wuertemberg to develop one of the first 3D-reconstruction software packages from digitised data.

Marinos specialized in 3-D Reconstruction from Digitized Data for his PhD. His software 3D-Reconstruction engine is available and running in more than 25 research centers around the world.

In 1994 he returned to Cyprus to work at the Higher Technical Institute (HTI) in the Computer Department. He was a leading scientist in his area of research at HTI and in 1995 he was personally awarded the 3-year Keep In Touch (KIT) project from the European Commission to work closely with INRIA at Sophia-Antipolis and the University of Stuttgart in Germany.
Since 2000, he is acting as an expert and evaluator for the European Commission in several areas of Education and Research programs. Marinos is also representing Cyprus in the European Commission Group of Experts of the Digitization and Preservation of Cultural Heritage Content (European Digital Library –Europeana). In November 2007 he was appointed as the first Cypriot Seconded National Expert at the European Commission in the DG-Research Marie-Curie Unit where he is responsible for the ITN-ENG Panel. In 2007 he joined STARC as a Research Scientist.
